Sunflowers & Roses (pictured at above)  is in the corporate collection of Johnson & Johnson.

Represented by Brion Galleries since its earliest days (as The Artists Showcase in Chester), Cathy Lang is one of our best-selling artists.  In the presence of her work, gallery visitors frequently drift into discussions of the exquisite paintings of Matisse and Cézanne.  Cathy's style can be variously described as joyful, nostalgic, serene and even excitingly contemporary.  Her new paintings retain all these qualities while bringing their contemporary spark to a higher pitch.  Some of her still lives incorporate subtle geometric elements, adding a new dimension to these powerful, flower-dominated works.  Her landscapes, however, are more gestural capturing the freedom of a warm breeze on a sunny day in all its simple elegance.

Cathy Lang says of her newest paintings, “My work has become increasingly spontaneous.  My still-lives are more complex – now containing more opposing patterns and fanciful perspectives.  Conversely, my landscapes have become more fluid as I strive in this genre for the elegance of simplicity.”

Essentially self-taught, Cathy’s painting has evolved from being tight and realistic to her currently lively, contemporary style of painterly realism.  Today, her work is driven by a creative passion as well as by her highly developed sense of color and design.  Oddly enough, a devastating fall in 1992 seems to have been the catalyst for this artistic growth.  The resultant injury made Cathy unable to continue her medical career.  She has since devoted all her energies to painting – frequently as a way to dispel the constant pain.  She began to use more vibrant colors wither traditional fat- over-lean method of painting.

tulipsBorn in Queens, New York, Cathy received her first set of oil paints at the age of sixteen. Most of her formal art education, however, has taken place in New Jersey – at the Hunterdon Art Center with David Leese; the Art Workshop in Boonton with Bill Guida; at the Monclair Art Museum; and at Creative Canvas in Newton with Tina Crowley.

Cathy says to those who view her work, “Today, I feel that my work is exciting.  Color is the very essence of what I do – creating a bold statement with jewel tone colors.  I take pride and care in my art and use only the finest archival quality canvas or linen to protect against acidic deterioration.  My oil paints have the highest degree of light fastness.  I hope my paintings give you the same feelings of happiness and enjoyment that I feel when  I paint them.”
